Applications & properties of our vitamins in dietary supplements

Vitamin A (Retinol)

For the application in dietary supplements special grades are available, which have e.g. excellent tableting properties or can be used for multivitamin preparations or in soft gelatin capsules. Vitamin A plays an important role in the visual system of the eye and in reproductive processes. All higher forms of life require retinol for reproduction. Vitamin A provides protection for the entire ectoderm and benefits growth and functionality of the skin as well as the mucous membranes. Moreover, vitamin A has a positive effect on the immune system by increasing the formation of antibodies.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)

In terms of dietary supplements vitamin B1 can be added to solid dosage forms (mono- & multivitamin formulations) as well as to liquid preparations. In its active form, vitamin B1 is a vital coenzyme for energy production. It helps the body’s cells to metabolize carbohydrates and to produce energy. Furthermore, it plays a role in muscle contraction and conduction of nerve signals and is an essential nutrient for neural functions.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)

Riboflavin High Flow 100 is the grade which may be applied related to dietary supplements. It can be used in all solid and liquid dosage forms such as tablets, hard-shell capsules, effervescent and other instant formulae. It is ideal for use in multivitamin formulations.

Riboflavin acts as a co-enzyme in many oxidizing and reducing enzymes and thus plays a role in the transfer of hydrogen atoms during the energy generating oxidation processes within the cell, known as the respiratory chain.

Vitamin B3 (Nicotinamide)

Vitamin B3 is used in dietary supplement applications as solid dosage forms (mono- & multivitamin formulations) and as liquid preparations (syrups, solutions etc.) Vitamin B3 acts as the electron donor or acceptor in many biological redox reactions.

Vitamin B5 (Calcium D-Pantothenat)

Calcium D-Pantothenate is used for dietary supplement applications in solid dosage forms (tablets, sugar-coated tablets, effervescent tablets, film-coated tablets, chewable tablets, capsules). Pantothenic acid is an essential component of coenzyme A as well as certain peptide coenzymes, in the form of which it is involved in various key reactions of the amino acid, fat and carbohydrate metabolisms.

Pantothenic acid plays an important role for the growth and normal function of body tissue. >> more information

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)

Pyridoxine Hydrochloride is used in dietary supplements for single- and multivitamin or B-complex preparations. Vitamin B6 is also a frequent ingredient for sports nutrition. In the form of the coenzymes pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP) and pyridoxamine phosphate (PMP), vitamin B6 plays a key role in the amino acid metabolism. As a coenzyme for the synthesis of biogenic amines it is required for the central nervous system (CNS).

Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin)

For dietary supplement applications vitamin B12 is particularly suitable for use in tablets and hard gelatine capsules. Due to the small particle size and relatively low vitamin B12 content of the dry powder, the vitamin can be distributed very homogenously even in formulations with a low active content. The product can be perfectly used in powder preparations, which are dissolved in water prior to use, e.g. sports nutrition products. Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) is a collective term for compounds which have a cobalt atom in the centre of a porphyrin-type ring system, but different substituents. In general, Cobalamin handles degradation of certain fatty acids and amino acids. It plays an important role for the methyl group transfer in the synthesis of amino acids.

Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid)

Folic acid can be used in almost all dosage forms (mono-preparations, B-complex as well as multivitamin formulae in the form of capsules, tablets, sugar-coated tablets, effervescent tablets, granules, syrups, solutions etc.). Folic acid is an important ingredient for prenatal vitamins.

Folate in general plays an important role in the synthesis of RNA and DNA and metabolizes amino acids which are required for cell division. Especially pregnant women should take care of consuming enough folates and supplement with folic acid.

Vitamin D (Cholecalciferol)

For the application in dietary supplements special grades are available, which are e.g. suitable for soft gelatin capsules, hard shell capsules, oily solutions, drops, ointments, and creams as well as for multivitamin/mineral tablets.

Vitamin D is also known as the anti-rickets vitamin. In addition to the hormones calcitonin and parathyroid hormone, it is required for the calcium homeostasis regulation as well as the phosphate metabolism.

Vitamin E (Tocopherol)

In dietary supplements vitamin E is used as an antioxidant in preparations containing fat (ointments, creams and oils). Some grades are more suitable for the direct compression of chewable tablets, sugar- and film-coated tablets, as well as hard gelatine capsules. DL-alpha-Tocopherol (E 307) can be used as an antioxidant in dietary supplements. It is important for normal immune system functions, gene expression and is positively influencing human health and disease prevention in general. In addition, vitamin E has antioxidant effects, which help to protect against cell damage and help to maintain cellular functions.

Vitamin K1 (Phylloquinone)

Related to dietary supplements vitamin K1 is foreseen for use in solid products as the sole active ingredient, as well as in multivitamin and mineral preparations (tablets, instant-drink granules, effervescent tablets, sugar-coated tablets, hard gelatine capsules).

Vitamin K is vital for the development of bones and teeth. Furthermore, it plays a crucial role in blood clotting as it activates blood clotting factors. Vitamin K is essential for the synthesis of osteocalcin, which helps to incorporate calcium phosphate into the bones.
